Perseverance

PERSEVERANCE

We may be late to the party, but even snow, rain and most importantly freezing rain couldn't keep us from discussing perseverance! Since coming back from Christmas Break on the 9th of January we have had EIGHT bus cancellation days....I think...I may have lost track. Coupled with report card this really put us under a real time crunch to make it through to the end of the term. While I wasn't directly teaching perseverance, it was a constant trait in our classroom as we worked hard to complete assignments that were supposed to last 4 weeks, in 2!

Finally! February came and we were able to talk Perseverance. With ministry standardized testing coming up in a couple of months we have been working hard with the grade 6's on building GRIT! We decided that think back to our first challenge from Kieran - Setting Goals. We made new goals that related to where we currently are on our education journey. After we did that we wrote every excuse we could think of us that would stop us from achieving our goals. Here is where the blank stares and "Ms Phillips have you gone crazy" comments come into play. We crumpled up our excuses and threw them out. Threw out any excuse we could think of and opened our minds to what we WILL do in order to achieve our goals. They had some fun with it - practicing their basketball shots into the recycling bins. It was a good lesson in letting go and moving forward.

And because we can't go too long without a bus cancellation day we had 2 more that week. Upon their return and as of today we continue to research perseverance, inspiring quotes and important figures and create posters to hang up around the school with the hope of inspiring others in our learning community to push through. I will be sure to post some pictures once we are done. Until then, we will continue to persevere and build our grit both inside and outside of the classroom!
