September in Mrs. Beierbach's room

September Monthly Summary

My apologies for the lateness of this post.

September was a very busy month for Mrs. Beierbach’s grade ⅘ class. We used fun videos and interactive activities leading up to our athlete mentor reveal. Students are very excited to have Arianne Jones as our mentor. Here are some screenshots and photos of the reveal.
Students were amazed how fast Arianne slides on the luge track!IMG_2257.JPG
This month, we have been learning how to set goals that are meaningful and S.M.A.R.T.
I borrowed a few ideas from Wendy Bilinsky, another CC teacher, and adapted them to use with my grade ⅘  class. Thanks for sharing, Wendy!

Here are some photos of students’ #DreamBig life goals. I found an illustration of a luge track to help students visualize all the twists and turns they will face as they work towards their goals.

Next, we looked at setting goals for our school’s character education program. This year, students can earn a t shirt by meeting their 7 Strengths for Success goal. Here is a sample t shirt:
As Arianne shared with us, we need to have several small goals that help us reach our long-term goals. We set a long term character strength goal and are working on achieving our first micro goals.  Here is the goal sheet we used:

And here are some student samples:

Arianne also challenged us to set a classroom goal. We discussed several ideas and settled on this big goal:  We will show respect to everyone in our classroom.

Our first micro goal to help us reach this goal is learning to have self-control over our talking time. (Yep, I’ve got a chatty crew this year.) I found a great mindfulness app called Smiling Mind and we are using it as a class to help us become more mindful of our surroundings and ourselves. I am also using it with my “detention crew” as a constructive alternative to punishing them for impulsive behaviour. Here’s a link if you want to check it out! https://smilingmind.com.au/

Now on to learning about Fair Play!
